Compulsory Service

In my opinion I do not believe that any one at any age should have to commit to any type of compulsory service. I believe that as a human we all have our rights and should not be forced to commit to something that we do not want to do. If it was mandatory for a person to serve in the military or the Peace Corps then it would violate our Fifth Amendment right whish says: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.” It would conflict with a persons beliefs and or their religion. In some religions they do not feel that they need to be involved in such things as wars and national conflicts. They feel they should be neutral in government issues such as the military or the Peace Corps. I do not feel that anyone for any reason should be forced to do anything they don’t want to do. I feel compulsory service for eighteen year olds would not benefit anyone so it should not be made mandatory. I believe it’s a way for the government to get free service out of people with no benefit in return. If they lose a limb or something in the war whats the government going to do for them. They barely do anthing for them now. In my opinion compulsory service is just another way for the government to get something out of the people who do it just because they want to. If someone wants to volunteer for it then they have every right to but don’t try and force it on the people that don’t want to.

Voting

I really don’t know any of my friends that don’t want to vote but what I would say to one of my friends that didn’t want to vote is..why wouldn’t you want to vote. In a way it’s a chance to get your voice heard and have some of your decisions taken seriously. Im going to vote because during the last election I wasn’t old enough and I didn get a chance to be apart of history when Barack Obama was elected for president. I would have really liked to be apart of that. Don’t you want to at least have a say in who the next president is going to be if Obama doesn’t do his job properly. Don’t you want to be able to say that’s who I voted for and that’s what I wanted to happen in the community and in the country. There really is no reason for you not to vote unless you really don’t care what happens to you or your community. Do you really want people deciding how your going to live in this community, state, country. I think its important for you to vote because maybe your vote could be the deciding vote in another election or a prop that would potentially be passed or wouldn’t be passed. Just think of the movie Swing Vote when Kevin Caustner was the last man in the country to vote and all the media and tv news ancors came to his house to ask him why he didn’t vote. If something like that really did happen would you really want to be the last person in the country that hasn’t voted yet.

Health Care

I believe health care is a right. Its a right because people dont really need health care but the government is trying to make sure that everyone has some even though it costs alot of money. Having health care has become a big deal because the government is trying to force it on some people even though they oppose it. Its a big deal because you have to pay, sometimes, extreme amounts of money and most people cant afford it. Its not a privilege because people that dont make an effort to work shouldnt get health care. Those people that dont have health care are the ones who choose not to make an effort to do anything with their lives. They are mostly the ones who live on the streets in tents and in sleeping bags. Those people have every opportunity to make something of themselves, just like those people with health care, but they chose not to. If you work and pay for health care then you deserve it so it is a right and NOT a privilege.

Problem Solver

Being a problem solver is something that I have tried to be all my life. When people have problems I try to help them find a solution with a good outcome for them but it never seems to work out that way. In school being a problem solver seems a lot easier to do. The problem solver that I am in school is one that attacks the problem and finds the best solution. One problem in school that I encountered this year was finding the right scholarship for me and actually doing it. The scholarship that I found was the 50 Best Moms in San Diego scholarship. It wanted you to explain why you think your mom was the best in San Diego and explain what she does to be the best. I completed this scholarship because I believed it was the right one for me to do and it was the solution to the problem that I had.
Another problem that I faced this year was figuring out the right classes that I needed to take to graduate. One of the classes that I needed to take wasn’t offered in our school first semester so I took the initiative to take the class over at another school and passed it with a B+. I am very proud of myself for doing so because the class was very important to my graduating.

Technology Producer

Well as a student at the School of Science and Technology I have pretty much accomplished this ESLR. Throuhgt most of my years in high scholl I have been trained, in a way, to be a technology producer. In my sophmore year I was in the school of science and engineering at Lincoln High School. For example, being at that school helped me to work on powerpoints that dealt with engineering and technology building a little train and a building. Doing such activities helped me to learn how to do such things with technology. In my junior year coming to SciTech helped me a whole lot more than I thought it would because I got to be hands on with some things that I did in my biotechnology, marine science, and chemistry classes. In biotch we created kits for a biotch company and sent them off to be used for the study of PTSD in marines that were overseas. This was a good experience for me. This year as a senior I learned how to use adobe Photoshop. I wasn’t in this class but I was always around to know what was going on most of the time. It helped me to learn how to use line art, and how to design a label along with editing pictures.

Effective Communicator

Through various classroom activities and assignments I have become an effective communicator in high school. When I first arrived to San Diego High School, I didn’t know anyone or anything about the school so I kept to myself and did things by myself in order to attempt to pass my classes. I soon realized that I needed to communicate with others in order to learn and make progress. One of my classes that required a lot of communication this year was peer education. In this class, we were all divided into groups in order to teach freshman and make them aware of issues such as HIV/STD’s and teenage drinking and driving. Being in this class made me realize that teaching is a very tough job, especially if group members won't share ideas. Our group was successful at times but we learned to communicate with each other and get our work done and teach a good lesson to the freshman that we had. Sometimes this was challenging because we all wanted to teach different lessons but we managed to put our preferences and differences aside and work together. At this point in my life, I have to be an effective communicator to get community service hours, apply for jobs and visit colleges. This will be a challenge for me but I know it can do it because I need to be able to communicate extremely well with others when I get out into the real world and start doing things for myself.
